5 Common Causes for Neck Pain

The Advanced Physicians Team • May 14, 2021

Poor ergonomics at the workplace and prolonged mobile phone and computer use have made neck pain prevalent. In fact, 75% of the population will have neck pain at a point in their lives. Full recovery happens in most cases, although neck pain can result in more severe issues. The causes of neck pain include:

1. Injury

Falling a short distance or twisting of the spine can result in minor neck injuries. Strains and sprains also cause stiffness and aches that spread to the upper arm or shoulder. The tissue or tendons can push against the nerves, leading to neck pain.

Severe trauma can occur in the case of whiplash in a car accident, direct blows, stab wounds, falls from significant heights, and sports injuries. Whiplash tears the neck’s tendons and muscles, resulting in headaches and tenderness. The muscles can feel stiff and taut, and you may have a reduced range of motion. Additionally, you'll likely feel pain when turning your neck.

Dislocation or fracture of the spine also results in neck pain. If the injury causes the spinal disc to get torn, you'll feel pain resulting from a herniated disc.

2. Poor Posture

Poor posture overworks the neck muscles, resulting in inflammation and pain. Good posture means having your ears directly above your shoulders with your shoulders back and chest open. This position will balance your head’s weight perfectly on your cervical spine.

When your neck is slanted forward, you force the cervical spine to support increasing loads of weight. As a result, your neck muscles overwork to counterbalance the gravity pull on your head and become more susceptible to painful strains. Additionally, the rounded back will cause more pain in your neck. The forward head posture can result from looking at your phone or computer, carrying a heavy backpack, or driving for too long.

3. Age

It’s normal to feel neck pain as you age since the discs become less pliable. Your cervical spine is essentially a stack of bones separated by discs made of cartilage. Joints, called facet joints, connect the vertebra and ligaments with support given by the muscles. Degenerative changes occur in these structures over time. For example, the cartilage at the ends of joints wears down with age. While some changes don’t cause symptoms, others cause neck or back pain.

4. Disease

Certain diseases can also cause neck pain, such as osteoarthritis that causes wear and tear of the facet joints. The resulting friction leads to neck pain and stiffness. Rheumatoid arthritis leads to bone spurs, swelling of the joints, and neck pain. Another disease that causes chronic neck pain is fibromyalgia. In the case of stenosis, the spine’s bony canals narrow and compress the cord and nerves.

Meningitis can also cause neck pain and stiffness as well as fever, headache, and nausea. Neck pain can also arise from head and neck cancers, including oral cancer and salivary gland cancers.

5. Repetitive Motion

Repetitive motions like swimming and dancing can overwork the neck’s ligaments, tendons, and muscles. In addition to pain, you may feel discomfort, tingling, and soreness in the neck. Sleeping in awkward positions for too long can also result in neck pain.

Chiropractic Care and Physical Therapy for Neck Pain

Our physical therapists and chiropractic experts at Advance Physicians will identify the cause of your neck pain. We use various diagnostic tools to locate the pain’s source and personalize a treatment plan for every patient. Most people relieve neck pain with over-the-counter or prescription medications. However, these short-term solutions do not deal with the underlying conditions.

At Advanced Physicians, we favor holistic treatments because of their long-term results. Gentle neck adjustments realign spinal structures and loosen joint restrictions. Additionally, physical therapy strengthens and stretches the neck, resulting in reduced pain. These non-invasive solutions can help you avoid medication and surgery.
