5 Little Changes That'll Make a Big Difference With Your Neck Pain

A significant part of the population suffers from neck pain. Neck pain could be associated with a health condition like degenerative disc disease. However, the chances that your neck pain is from a health condition are minimal. For most people, neck pain originates from everyday habits. Fortunately, there are minor changes you can make in your daily life to ease your neck pain. They include the following.

 Stretching

1. Stretching Daily

Do you work on a desk all day long? Sitting for long hours or performing repetitive tasks can result in a painful neck. Overworking your spine could intensify your neck pain and limit your functionality.

Stretching will help ease tight muscles on your neck and spine. It helps relieve pressure from nerves in the cervical region, reducing neck pain. When stretching, strengthen your muscles as you tilt your head on one side. Hold the position for a minute and tilt your head to the other side. Aim to stretch frequently, at least twice a day, to get relief from neck pain.

2. Managing Your Stress

Some people experience stiff necks and neck pain due to stress. Therefore, it's important to reduce stress and manage it. You can manage stress by eating healthy, exercising, or ensuring you get enough sleep. Another way you can deal with stress is by getting in a support group. Interacting with people going through the same struggles could offer an emotional lift.

Alternatively, you can enroll in cognitive behavioral therapy. Talking to a therapist could help manage stress and ease your neck pain. Time management can also help manage stress by prioritizing what is essential and eliminating other less-helpful obligations.

Lifting Heavy Items

3. Not Lifting Heavy Items

A common cause for neck pain is straining neck muscles which could come from lifting heavy items. Therefore, avoid lifting or carrying heavy items. Instead, ask for help or use machinery to move bulky items around, especially if you work in the manufacturing industry.

Other than boxes, heavy items include gym weights. Intensive gym workouts like carrying heavy bags could strain your shoulder, which could cause a stiff neck. If you must lift weights in the gym, avoid lifting for a long time to manage neck pain.

4. Adopting Better Posture

Your posture plays a crucial role in a healthy spine. You misalign your spine when you assume a forward head posture or hunchback, causing a stiff and tightened neck. Therefore, over time, you will experience neck pains.

You can avoid neck pain by improving your posture. Consider getting ergonomic-friendly furniture, especially for your office to maintain a straight back. Ensure your head is in a neutral position and hold your gadgets at eye level to avoid straining your neck as you look down at them.

Sleeping Position

5. Being Conscious About Your Sleeping Position

It's always recommended to get at least 6 hours of sleep every night. Therefore, you spend a lot of time in bed, and the wrong sleeping position could strain your neck. To get a good sleep in the proper position, try sleeping on your back or side instead of sleeping on your stomach. Sleeping on your stomach puts stress on your cervical spine, and thus, could accelerate your neck pain.

Additionally, invest in a good pillow and mattress. Get a thin pillow to avoid sleeping in a forward head posture if you sleep on your back. On the other hand, you might need a thicker pillow to maintain a neutral spine when sleeping on your side. Always swipe an old mattress for a new and firmer one to sleep better.

Seek Medical Help

Have you tried incorporating the above changes, but your neck pain still persists? You should seek medical help. A physical therapist can help reduce inflammation and pain. Additionally, a physical therapist can also develop effective treatment strategies to ensure the pain doesn’t recur. Book your appointment with our physical therapist today!
