How to Manage Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a thrilling experience. However, it can sometimes get uncomfortable, making it hard to perform everyday tasks. If you notice your hands are swelling and fingers are occasionally getting numb, you might be experiencing symptoms associated with carpal tunnel syndrome. It is common during pregnancy and could make your experience more unpleasant. Here is a guide on carpal tunnel syndrome and how you can manage it during pregnancy.

Why Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Common During Pregnancy?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is the compression of the median nerve through the carpal tunnel. The median nerve runs through the neck to your shoulders and fingers. When compressed in the carpal tunnel, the tunnel between the bones and ligaments in your wrists causes a numb and tingling sensation.

When you get pregnant, your blood volume doubles. So, the extra fluid increases the pressure in the blood vessels, which causes swelling. Sometimes, the high pressure compresses the median nerve in the carpal tunnel area. Thus, carpal tunnel syndrome is common in pregnant women from 30 weeks.

Pregnant ladies are also more susceptible to carpal tunnel syndrome because they may be moving less. When you add weight due to pregnancy or often feel fatigued, it is common to prefer to move less. However, less movement means less circulation and less oxygen and blood reaching your hands.

Repetitive motions can also make it easy to suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome. For example, repetitive hand motions could compress the nerve if you work at a desk or type a lot.

Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel

Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel

The symptoms of carpal tunnel are similar for pregnant and other patients. They manifest as:

  • Numbness in your thumb, index, and middle finger
  • Burning sensation
  • Tingling
  • Swollen fingers
  • Pain on your hand on the wrist
  • Trouble gripping objects

These symptoms might come and go during the early stages of carpal tunnel syndrome. If ignored, it worsens over time, with frequent numbness and weakness. These symptoms tend to be acute at night because when you sleep, the fluid from the lower part of your body redistributes to your extremities. Thus, increasing your nerves’ pressure.

How to Manage Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Here are some easy tips to help you manage CTS:

  • Cold Therapy
Get a towel, and wrap ice in the towel. Place the towel on the affected wrist for a few minutes. You can repeat the process several times a day. You can also try the contrast bath. Get a bowl of warm water and another with icy water. Soak your wrist in warm water for a minute, and then move it to the bowl with cold water for another minute. Alternate for five minutes and repeat several times a day.

  • Use a Wrist Brace
Wear a splint or a brace to ensure your wrist remains in a neutral position. If you can, wear it during the day or night to help you manage the symptoms.

If the home remedies aren't offering any relief, it is time to seek professional help. Here is how chiropractic care can help manage carpal tunnel syndrome.

Does Pregnancy Induced Carpal Tunnel Syndrome End on its Own?

breastfeeding

If you suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome due to pregnancy, it can dissipate after giving birth. However, for some, the syndrome might continue, especially with hours of cradling your young one due to the cradling position. So, it may or may not end after giving birth.

Besides, you can easily compress the median nerve when breastfeeding in the wrong posture. Fortunately, you can stretch to help alleviate the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome.
